Admissions

Hospital admission

For inpatient treatment, you will need to be referred by a physician. This can be organised by your physician in private practice, a physician from another hospital or a physician from one of our outpatient clinics.

You can also be admitted for an inpatient stay through our Emergency Department.

At the appointed time, please report to the Anmeldung (Admissions or Registration Office).

For your stay in the hospital, please bring your health insurance card and your written admission instructions. If you have medical reports or X-rays from your general practitioner or specialist, please also bring them with you.

The staff in the Admissions Office will complete the necessary formalities. The following information will be required:

  • Personal information such as date of birth, address and telephone numbers
  • Your health insurance details and for privately insured individuals information on what charges will be covered by your insurance company
  • Level of service you would like to have (e.g. private medical treatment, one or two bedded room)
  • Name of your general practitioner and/or specialist
  • Name and address of a contact person
  • Would you like to use the services of the Patientenring GmbH ?

We need these details for your health insurance statement, for the referring physician and for organisation of your Discharge from the hospital. During the admissions process you will also be asked to sign the Treatment Contract, the Choice of Services contract and information relating to data protection and patient privacy.

Outpatient Appointment

At the scheduled time, please report to the Anmeldung (Admissions or Registration Office) at the appropriate department. For your outpatient appointment, please bring your health insurance card and your written instructions for the appointment. If you have medical reports or X-rays from your general practitioner or specialist, please also bring them with you.

Amenity Beds

If you value individual tailor-made service alongside your medical treatment, you can take advantage of the services which are offered with the amenity bed in our private ward. Even if you are coming to the University Medical Center Freiburg on an outpatient basis, you can enjoy the care and service of our specialised staff when you reserve a room in our private ward.

Arrival

If you are arriving by car, once you reach Freiburg, follow the signs for Stadtmitte (City Center) and Uni-Kliniken (University Medical Center). As the hospital is located in the city center, parking spaces are limited. The University Medical Center car parking is subject to charge (see also Parking ). Detailed maps are available on this website and in this guidebook. The Departments of Dermatology and Psychiatry are located off-campus on Hauptstrasse. This street is near the city center and can be reached via Habsburgerstrasse.

If you are coming by tram, take the following trams at the main rail station (Hauptbahnhof):

  • To reach the Zentralklinikum (the Main Medical Center Campus), take tram number 5 in the direction of Hornusstrasse. Get off the tram at either Robert-Koch-Strasse or Friedrich-Ebert-Platz.
  • To reach the Hautklinik (Dermatology Department) and the Psychiatrie (Psychiatry Department), take trams number 1, 3 or 5 to Bertoldsbrunnen in the city center. Change to tram number 2 in the direction of Zaehringen and get off at Hauptstrasse.

The Breisgau-S-Bahn, which operates between the main rail station and Breisach, stops directly at the Medical Center.

The Medical Center can also be quickly and easily reached by taxi.

Choice of Services

Regardless of how you are insured, you have the possibility to choose certain services such as a one or two bedded room or treatment by the head of the department. If you are covered by a public health insurance plan, you must pay for these additional costs if you do not have supplemental insurance. You are also responsible for the extra costs if your private health insurance plan does not cover these services. Please clarify what your insurance will cover before your admission to the hospital. Please note that all medical services involved in your care (e.g. services by anaesthesiologists, laboratory physicians, radiologists, etc.) are charged separately. If you intend to take advantage of a choice of service, please contact our Admissions Office .

Foreign Patients

If you are not insured by a German health insurance plan, you need to have a valid entitlement certificate from your health insurance company aboard, in order to receive treatment by a physician or a hospital at the University Medical Center Freiburg (e.g. for emergency treatment: EHIC, E111; for special treatment: E112, etc. forms may be required).

Patients whose treatments are not covered under the EU framework or a bilateral agreement with their foreign health insurance company may still be treated at the University Medical Center Freiburg. Inpatient Stay

For inpatient treatment, you need a physician’s hospitalisation letter. This letter may be from a referring physician or a physician from one of our outpatient clinics. After an emergency, you may be taken from the Emergency Department to a ward.

What should you bring for your stay?

  • Health insurance card
  • Hospitalisation letter from your physician or specialist
  • Preoperative tests and laboratory studies results
  • Important reports, findings and X-rays from your physician, specialist or from previous hospital visits
  • Details of your current medications
  • If relevant, documentation or records of blood coagulation disorders, allergies, diabetes and pacemakers, etc.

What should you pack?

  • Toiletries
  • Nightwear
  • Robe and slippers
  • Comfortable clothes e.g. training suit
  • Books, magazines, MP3 players, games, writing paper, etc. for entertainment

Please leave valuables, large amounts of cash and mobile phones at home (see also Telephone ). Because space is limited, your suitcase should not be too big and preferably foldable.

Before any operation please discuss your current medications with the doctor in charge.

Overnight Accommodations

If you would like to come to the hospital prior to your admission and you or your relatives would like overnight accommodations, different categories of guestrooms are available. Details are available at our information desks (see also Information ).

There is also an Elternhaus (Parents' House) for parents who wish to remain near the hospital while their child is receiving treatment at the University Medical Center. The Parents’ House is located next to the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. If you have any questions about the Parents’ House, please call +49 761 275242.

Parking

Around the University Medical Center Freiburg, you can find car parking which are subject to charge. There is also a basement garage. Parking possibilities are shown in the middle of this guidebook. A number of long term parking spaces on Elsaesser Strasse and Mathildenstrasse are available at a reduced daily rate of € 5 and a weekly rate of € 20.

The parking fee can be paid directly at the parking ticket machine with coins or with the Geldkarte (University Money Card). Under exceptional circumstances and for unusually long parking periods, it is possible to speak with Traffic Services. You can reach them by phone at +49 761 270 1929 or -2150.

Practice Fee

An outpatient fee of 10 € is required to settle all outpatient services. It is paid during the first outpatient encounter. This extra charge is also required for emergency medical treatments, where no immediate emergency referral has been given. The practice fee will be charged by the department(s) and physician(s) who have rendered the care and remitted to health insurance companies.

Treatment Contract

When you are admitted to the hospital, you will be asked to sign a Treatment Contract (Behandlungsvertrag). This contract gives legal authorization for your treatment during your stay in the hospital. The contract covers the general contractual conditions of the hospital and the treatment costs. Please carefully read the contract during the admission process (see also Admissions Office ).

Patient privacy and data protection are very important to us. In the Treatment Contract, we describe various forms of patient data transmission.

The Treatment Contract also gives you the opportunity to choose between the different services that we offer. If you would like to take advantage of these services, we will prepare a separate contract, the Choice of Services Agreement (Wahlleistungsvereinbarung), for you. This agreement will detail the extra costs (see also Choice of Services ).

Valuables

As the hospital does not accept responsibility for the loss of valuables or cash, we advise you to leave these items at home.

Waiting Times

Emergency cases take priority. For this reason, things can sometimes take longer than planned. We ask for your understanding. We will make every effort to reduce your waiting time to a minimum. A book or a magazine will help during these waiting times.
